Nortura and Norges Vel collaborate with Uganda Meat Producer's Cooperative Union Ltd and the farmer-owned company Uganda Farmers Meat Company to develop the meat sector in Uganda. We look at the entire value chain from production to sale in order to offer quality meat to consumers at a price the farmers benefit from.
Uganda is experiencing a growing demand for quality meat due to a growing middle class and general economic growth. This increases the need for production of adequate and affordable food, including meat and meat products of good quality and quantity that are sustainably produced and delivered to the market.
Restructuring the meat sector
Restructuring of the meat sector has over several years been a priority for Uganda Meat Producer's Cooperative Union Ltd (UMPCU) in cooperation with Nortura and Norges Vel. The continuation of the collaboration focuses on strengthening the 33 meat-producing cooperatives that are members of UMPCU, enabling farmers to access the market and get a good price for their animals. As part of this, the Livestock Resource Center (LRC) is further developed as a center for collection of animals to ensure constant supply of cattle to the market. Increased inclusion of women in the meat value chain is also a priority.
Increases the turnover of animals
The farmer-owned company Uganda Farmers Meat Company (UFMC) was established in 2011, and in 2017 they overtook the responsibility for the purchase and slaughter of animals for UMPCU. Despite several challenges in the market, UFMC has slowly but surely increased their turnover of animals. Strengthening the company and establishing good models for buying and selling cattle from cooperatives are important aspects of the project.
Our contribution and role
Norges Vel contributes with expertise in value chain development, business development, organizational development, and capacity building. It is important to build strong organizations and companies that can eventually stand on their own. We are focusing on finding good business models and assess challenges and opportunities both in the production and market and everything needed to get from A to Z.
Nortura is an important partner that contributes with their professional competence in mobilization of farmers, meat production, and knowledge of market access and branding. Organizational and human resource development are also crucial for achieving sustainable enterprises, which we prioritize throughout the entire project period.
- Contributed to formalizing the meat value chain. There are now routines for checking animals before sale, transportation is improved, as well as payment procedure to farmers, and agreements with purchasers.
- Strengthened organization and business. The farmer company UFMC increases the turnover of animals each year, and UMPCU has increased recognition from the authorities and other actors in the livestock sector in Uganda.
- The price for cattle has increased from USD 275 in 2015 to USD 315 in 2017.
Did you know…
In Uganda, the population consumes an average of six kilograms of meat annually, mainly cattle. This is far below World Health Organization's recommendation of 50 kg a year. Better and increased production of quality meat is therefore important to ensure a balanced and nutritious diet for the Ugandan population.
